The Delhi Metro handles over 4m passenger trips per day.
The Delhi Metro, one of the world’s largest urban transit systems, has launched a new mobile app that allows passengers to purchase tickets on their smartphones using QR codes. The “DMRC Travel” app, launched this week by Vikas Kumar, Delhi Metro’s managing director, is designed to speed up and simplify the ticketing process for Delhi’s harried commuters.
Instead of queuing to buy paper tickets or top-up smart cards, passengers can now generate a QR code ticket within the app and simply flash their screen at the turnstile to pass through. The Delhi Metro handles over 4m passenger trips per day, so any time savings and added convenience are welcome. The app accepts various digital payment methods, from credit cards to India’s UPI payments system, and can store default payment details to expedite future purchases.
Remarkably, Delhi Metro upgraded its automatic fare collection (AFC) gates to scan QR codes without suspending passenger services. Engineers modified over 60% of the gates overnight, with the remaining upgrades to be finished within two months. This technical feat will bolster Delhi Metro’s position as an innovator among urban transit networks.
The QR code ticketing system, popular in Chinese metros, brings Delhi Metro firmly into the digital age. Its embrace of mobile technology should make travel more pleasant for Delhi’s long-suffering commuters, who squeeze into packed trains for two-hour slogs each day.
By eliminating queues and simplifying payments, the new “DMRC Travel” app may even entice more Delhiwallahs out of their cars and onto public transport. For an overburdened system straining under the weight of overpopulation and rapid development, such adaptability and innovation are admirable. Delhi Metro’s tech-savvy administrators deserve acclaim for this shrewd advance into contactless travel.
