Italian manufacturer works with Volkswagen Group on battery development as MotoE championship ends.

Ducati has unveiled a prototype electric bike using solid-state battery technology as the company continues research into alternatives to petrol engines. The Bologna-based manufacturer displayed the V21L prototype at the IAA Mobility show in Munich on September 8, featuring batteries from QuantumScape developed with Audi and PowerCo.

This development follows the conclusion of the FIM MotoE World Championship at the end of 2025. Ducati participated in the electric racing series to build internal expertise in battery technology. During three years of MotoE competition, the company collected performance data from 18 riders across all races. Battery improvements during this period reduced the V21L's battery pack weight by 8.2kg.

However, current battery technology still makes electric motorcycles significantly heavier than petrol-powered racing bikes whilst offering limited range. Ducati is working with Volkswagen Group companies to develop battery packs with higher energy density. The solid-state battery prototype represents the latest stage in this research programme. The company confirmed it will continue developing electric technology capabilities whilst maintaining focus on internal combustion engines for its current road bike range.
