Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles led the electric car segment with 8,543 units.

India's electric vehicle (EV) market posted strong growth across nearly every segment in April 2026, with passenger EV retail sales rising 75 per cent year-on-year to 23,506 units, up from 13,421 units in April 2025, according to figures released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations of India (FADA).

Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles led the electric car segment with 8,543 units, a 77 per cent increase on the 4,822 units it sold in the same month last year. Mahindra & Mahindra came second with 5,413 units, up 64 per cent from 3,301 units, while JSW MG Motor India took third place with 5,006 units against 3,777 units a year earlier which growth of around 33 per cent.

The electric two-wheeler segment outpaced even those numbers in volume terms. Total sales reached 1,48,740 units in April 2026, compared with 92,538 units in April 2025, a year-on-year rise of nearly 61 per cent.

TVS Motor Company held the top position with 37,683 units, up 89 per cent from 19,976 units, while Bajaj Auto came second with 32,898 units against 19,162 a year ago, a gain of 72 per cent. Ather Energy was the fastest-growing of the three major players, more than doubling its volumes to 27,034 units from 13,332 units in April 2025.

Electric three-wheeler sales edged up 3.3 per cent to 64,549 units from 62,489 units in the year-earlier period which is a modest growth relative to other segments but still a record monthly figure for the category.

Electric commercial vehicles recorded the sharpest proportional jump of all, with retail sales more than doubling to 2,245 units from 902 units in April 2025, albeit from a comparatively small base.

Taken together, the April figures indicate a broad shift in buying patterns across vehicle categories, with electric options gaining ground at the expense of petrol and other conventional powertrains in virtually every corner of the market.
