Electric cars and e-buses can now glide past toll booths for free on two of Maharashtra’s marquee corridors, the Hindu Hrudaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Samruddhi Mahamarg and the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Sewri–Nhava Sheva Atal Setu under the state’s Electric Vehicle Policy 2025. The policy explicitly provides a 100 percent toll waiver for passenger EVs on three routes: the Yashwantrao Chavan Mumbai–Pune Expressway, Samruddhi Mahamarg, and Atal Setu, as part of a “Sustainable Transport Corridor” push.
For the Atal Setu specifically, the Urban Development Department has operationalised the waiver for electric passenger cars (M1) and electric buses (M3/M4), including state transport and private operators, via a notification that partially modifies the earlier toll levy on the 21.8-km sea link and its approaches. Media summaries of the order (Notification No. MRD-3325/C.R.123/UD-7) note the exemption applies at the Shivaji Nagar and Gavan toll plazas, and remains in force through 2025.
What about the rest of India? There is no nationwide EV toll exemption on National Highways: MoRTH’s extant rules list specific exempt categories (e.g., official/emergency vehicles) and do not include EVs as a class. Any relief therefore depends on state policy or specific corridor orders.

A few states do go further on their own roads. Himachal Pradesh’s EV Policy 2022 clearly says: "EVs registered in H.P. and other States will be exempted from paying toll taxes on highways for the duration of the policy," making HP one of the first to announce a blanket state-toll waiver. Haryana’s EV Policy similarly provides that "All the registered electric vehicles will be exempted from paying of State Toll tax." Implementation, however, is limited to state tolls; NHAI plazas remain governed by central rules.
Back in Maharashtra, the EV Policy 2025 also says a phased waiver on other state highways under PWD will be decided by a steering committee headed by the Chief Secretary, indicating the toll-free net for EVs could widen beyond the three headline corridors.
