Apple’s F1: The Movie emerges as its best-performing theatrical release yet. Strong IMAX screenings and global demand fuel its success, but high production costs may limit its profitability.
Apple’s latest film, F1: The Movie, has become its highest-grossing theatrical release, amassing over ₹24,500 crore globally within ten days, according to Variety.
The movie has surpassed previous Apple Originals. It raked in ₹12,200 crore worldwide during its opening weekend, surpassing Ridley Scott’s Napoleon and Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon.
Outside the US and Canada, F1: The Movie earned ₹9,160 crore. Its top international markets include China (₹1,840 crore), the United Kingdom (₹1,450 crore), Mexico (₹1,030 crore), France (₹960 crore), and Australia (₹820 crore).
IMAX screenings contributed ₹5,020 crore, about 20 per cent of total sales.
Interestingly, with a production budget exceeding ₹20,900 crore and marketing costs around ₹8,360 crore, F1’s current gross falls short of the estimated break-even point.
Studios typically retain 50 per cent of domestic ticket revenue and less internationally, meaning theatrical earnings alone may not yet cover the film’s investment.
However, the sheer hype that this movie has been able to generate sheds a spotlight on Apple’s growing influence in theatrical releases. The company is relying on high-profile projects to compete with traditional studios.
While F1: The Movie marks a milestone for Apple Original Films, its high costs suggest reliance on streaming revenue from Apple TV+ to achieve profitability. But, the film’s impressive box office growth signals strong audience demand.
