Spin ruins Toyota's charge and lets the prancing horse claim back-to-back Le Mans wins.
Ferrari emerged victorious in a thrilling 24 Hours of Le Mans race. This was by edging out Toyota in a close battle. The No. 50 AF Corse-run Ferrari 499P, driven by Nicklas Nielsen, Antonio Fuoco, and Miguel Molina, took the chequered flag after a race heavily impacted by rain. The win capped off a dramatic comeback for the trio, who faced a scare with the car's right-side door coming loose late in the race. However, Nielsen's skill and composure behind the wheel, combined with strategic calls from the pit crew, ensured the team returned to the track in time to challenge for the lead.
The final two hours were a tense chess match between Ferrari and Toyota, with the advantage swinging back and forth as rain lashed the Circuit de la Sarthe. The No. 7 Toyota driven by Jose Maria Lopez initially held the pace advantage, carving out faster lap times on the slick track. However, Lady Luck intervened in a cruel twist for Toyota. A critical error saw Lopez spin the car at Turn 2, likely due to the harsh track conditions. The spin not only damaged Lopez's momentum but also handed back the lead to the No. 50 Ferrari driven by Nielsen. This unexpected mistake by Toyota proved to be the turning point in the race, as Ferrari capitalised on the opportunity.
Lap times and strategic decisions played a vital role in the closing stages. The No. 50 Ferrari pitted for fuel and tyres at a crucial juncture. This put it back in the lead just as the rain intensified. This bold move proved decisive, as it allowed Nielsen to push on slick tyres while Lopez in the No. 7 Toyota was stuck on a slower set. Further complicating matters for Toyota was a last-minute overtake by Sebastien Buemi in the No. 8 Toyota on Lopez. While Buemi's manoeuvre wasn't for the overall race lead, it forced Lopez to spend extra energy defending his position. This threw his own challenge for the win into jeopardy.
Despite a late scare with a yellow flag in the final sector, Nielsen navigated and brought the No. 50 Ferrari home victorious. This win marks Ferrari's second consecutive victory at Le Mans, solidifying its position as a major force to be reckoned with in the endurance racing world. The Prancing Horse's return to the top step of the podium at Le Mans comes after decades of chasing victory, and it will undoubtedly be looking to extend their winning streak next year.
While Ferrari reigned supreme in Hypercar with the No. 50 499P driven by Nicklas Nielsen, Antonio Fuoco, and Miguel Molina, other classes witnessed their own well-deserved victories. In LMP2, the intense competition saw United Autosports take the checkered flag with its No. 22 Oreca 07 Gibson driven by Filipe Albuquerque, Phil Hanson, and Fabio Scherer. The LMGT3 class was dominated by Manthey EMA's No. 91 Porsche 911 GT3 R, piloted by Richard Lietz, Morris Schuring, and Yasser Shahin. These victories showcase the diverse range of competition and talent present across the various classes of Le Mans. Toyota, despite a late-race spin from its No. 7 entry, managed to salvage a second-place finish with the car driven by Jose Maria Lopez, Kamui Kobayashi, and Mike Conway. Ferrari's No. 51 499P, driven by Alessandro Pier Guidi, James Calado, and Antonio Giovinazzi, managed to clinch a hard-fought third place, proving the Italian manufacturer's overall strength at Le Mans this year.
The LMP2 category is expected to see even more competition with the arrival of new manufacturers and technologies. Manufacturers are constantly innovating and pushing the boundaries of performance, while cost-containment measures are being explored to make the category more accessible to privateer teams.
In LMGT3, the focus will likely be on developing cars that are even more driver-friendly and provide a balanced performance across a wide range of tracks. The growing popularity of GT racing around the world is sure to attract more manufacturers and teams to the LMGT3 category, making it an even more exciting class to watch in the years to come.
