The exterior design shows a muscular, sharply angled SUV that will have strong road presence.

Mahindra’s next brand new SUV, the highly anticipated production version of the Vision S concept, has appeared in the Government of India’s latest patent and design registration reports. Based on the Vision S concept showcased by Mahindra at its annual Independence Day event last year, this new model is expected to be formally unveiled this August 15.

Based on the official image of its exterior, the upcoming SUV will have a rugged, boxy look with sharp angles and almost no curves. The headlights appear to be square with one horizontal slat extending outwards for a little design flair. The front grille has vertical slats and sits above a chunky bumper.

While the look is overall utilitarian, Mahindra could target this at a variety of buyers including urban commuters who want a premium SUV that has a commanding presence and is fun to drive on weekend trips. In line with its other recent launches, this upcoming SUV is likely to have a tech-heavy interior with multiple large screens and plenty of up-to-date features and conveniences.

Mahindra showed off four concept vehicles last year, all based on its flexible Nu_IQ platform and designed at its Global Design studios in Mumbai and Banbury, UK. The Vision S, Vision X, Vision T, and Vision SXT models sparked considerable excitement for their radical new designs and overall platform capabilities. The Vision S concept, in particular, was outfitted as a rugged “expedition vehicle”, but with lifestyle-centric touches such as an illuminated grille.

The Vision S, which is likely to be launched with a completely different name, is a sub-4m SUV. Mahindra said during the platform introduction that all models will have roomy interiors. The concept version showcased a relatively long wheelbase with minimal overhangs. Cabin space and passenger comfort, especially for the second row, remains to be seen.

As for specifications and capabilities, the Nu_IQ platform is the basis for a dramatic strategic expansion for Mahindra. supports multiple powertrains including petrol, diesel, electric with multiple battery capacities, and hybrid. Fast charging will be designed into electric models. Nu_IQ models will primarily be front-wheel-drive with the possibility of all-wheel-drive models and variants. It also supports left- and right-hand-drive configurations for ease of adapting to different global markets. The platform is also engineered with safety in mind.

Mahindra has previously confirmed that the first Nu_IQ model will be manufactured at its Chakan plant, which is currently undergoing expansion and only just put out its 3,000,000th vehicle. The company's international growth plan includes launching 16 new SUVs over the next five years.

While disguised mules have been spotted testing, this is the first clear look at the exterior design of what is likely to be the production version of the Vision S concept. The timing of its registration with the Office of the Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trade Marks in India also points to an imminent launch. While the model is likely to be unveiled on August 15 and its name should be announced, it could be a few weeks or months before it actually goes on sale.
