Foxconn said it is more keen on collaborating with Nissan rather than acquiring it.
Foxconn, the contract electronics manufacturing giant from Taiwan, is reportedly in talks with Nissan to form a coalition. The company’s chairman, Young Liu, told the media that Foxconn is more keen on collaborating with Nissan rather than acquiring it. This comes after Honda-Nissan merger talks went downhill last week due to reported disagreements between the two brands.
Nissan is reportedly open to working with new partners like Foxconn, according to sources. The deal not working out with Honda puts Nissan on the backfoot and the deal reportedly went sour due to growing differences between the two Japanese auto giants.
“Purchasing its shares is not our aim; our aim is cooperation,” said Liu when questioned if Foxconn is considering buying a stake in Nissan. However, Foxconn is also interested in cooperating with Renault considering the French company’s stake in Nissan. Liu also said Foxconn has no interest in being an automotive “brand” and will only provide commissioned design and manufacturing services.
This is not the first time Foxconn has shown interest in Nissan. In December last year, the Taiwanese tech giant had reportedly shown interest in acquiring Nissan after news broke that Honda and Nissan were planning a merger. Foxconn also has an automotive subsidiary called Foxtron which makes its own EV platforms and makes customisable vehicles for its contract partners which include the now-bankrupt Fisker from the USA and Luxgen in Taiwan.
