Google's AI will process text reviews to generate summaries and natural-language directions.
Google is working on new Maps and Search features that will help electric vehicle drivers precisely locate compatible chargers, see their type and speed, check whether they are currently occupied, and plan routes that work best based on such information. The changes have been announced just ahead of Earth Day on April 22, which aims to spread awareness about environmental sustainability. Google’s examples show the features demonstrated in the USA, and while some are promised to roll out globally, there’s no fixed timeline beyond “the coming months”.
With the update, users will be able to see the precise location of EV charging stations even within areas or buildings such as a multi-level parking facility. These will be shown as natural-language text descriptions and will be gathered and summarised from user reviews, using AI. Google will also be prompting users to add their own reviews, so that these directions and other information will stay accurate and up-to-date.
Users will be prompted to submit comments, photos, and answers to simple questions such as “Did you charge successfully?” and “How long did you wait for a charger to become available?” in addition to rating the charging station on a scale of 1-5 stars.

Other information that will be shown to EV drivers while using Google Maps will include real-time availability and charging speed. This can be shown on a phone’s display or the car’s own navigation system. Drivers who are running low on power will see charger locations along their route.
When plotting long drives with multiple stops, Google Maps will soon be able to see the best available charging stops en route, particularly hotels and other rest stops where users can charge overnight. A new EV charging filter has also been added to Google’s hotel search results, letting users easily find a place to stay where overnight charging will be possible.
