Chinese Automotive Giant Enters Motorcycle Market with Souo Touring Brand
Chinese automotive giant Great Wall Motors has announced its entry into the two-wheeled market with a rather unique engine. Its newly formed subsidiary, Great Wall Souo, has unveiled a revolutionary engine design: a flat-eight engine specifically built for motorcycles.
Most large touring motorcycles rely on four-cylinder or six-cylinder engines. Great Wall Souo's aspiration design borrows inspiration from aeroplane engines, with eight cylinders arranged horizontally in a flat layout. While uncommon for motorcycles, this configuration promises a smoother power delivery. This could be a key factor for long-distance touring comfort.
Details about the Souo motorcycle itself are still emerging, but the engine is undoubtedly the star of the show. Unlike Honda's GoldWing, which utilises a SOHC (single overhead camshaft)), Great Wall Souo has a more modern DOHC (double overhead camshaft) design. This should potentially have higher performance and better fuel efficiency.
Early glimpses from Great Wall Souo suggest a heavyweight touring motorcycle similar to the Honda Gold Wing. Expect features like full luggage capabilities and a plush passenger seat. The engine size is estimated to fall between 2,000cc and 2,500cc.
Great Wall Souo appears ready to challenge established touring giants like Honda. While the company hasn't confirmed international availability yet, its global presence in the car market hints at potential future expansion for its motorcycle division.
