iPhone users only have to update to the latest version of the Grok app, which now includes CarPlay support.
Elon Musk’s Grok AI tool is now available as a native app for CarPlay users. Like all other chatbot and communication tools, its interface is primarily voice-driven, to minimise driver distraction. Support for voice-based AI assistants rolled out with iOS 26.4 earlier this year, and app developers have steadily been rolling out support.
iPhone users only have to update to the latest version of the Grok app, which now includes CarPlay support. When paired with a CarPlay-compatible vehicle, the Grok app icon will show up on the home screen. Some users have reported seeing a placeholder CarPlay app recently, which only displays a message saying that the feature is coming soon.
Chatbot apps on CarPlay do not replace the default Siri voice assistant and cannot be used to control car features. They also have to be launched and invoked manually. Instead, Apple allows them to be used to search for information and get conversational answers to questions.
The app will show a list of recent conversations on the paired car’s central infotainment screen, along with a buttons to disable the chatbot for privacy and terminate the chat. Users can also choose different artificial voices and accents for Grok from its CarPlay settings.
Grok is already integrated into sister company Tesla’s recent vehicles. It is currently offered in beta form, but is more tightly integrated and offers multiple “personalities” ranging from Storyteller to Assistant to Unhinged. Currently, it can be used to set navigation targets and change them mid-journey, and discover points of interest. It can also be invoked with a “Hey, Grok” voice command, or by pressing a button on a Tesla car’s steering wheel. Eventually, Tesla says it will replace the simpler voice command system and take over functions such as media playback, climate control, and other car settings.
The generative AI chatbot has come under fire in the past for promoting conspiracy theories such as holocaust denial, as well as right-wing political ideology, as well as espousing Musk’s personal views and praising him to an unrealistic extent.
Interestingly, Tesla is reportedly working on bringing CarPlay to its vehicles, after years of refusing to support third-party smartphone integration software.
