A weekend breakfast ride turned into a nightmare for these bikers.

A recent incident in Gurugram involving a group of bikers has caused much stir. The bikers were stopped by a group of hooligans in an SUV who went on to cause damage to both their prized possessions as well as the riders. The reason for the situation escalation is unclear but clearly, in this act, the party that suffered were the bikers. And that is not the breakfast ride any of the riders had in mind.

Things were clearly not civilised and we wouldn’t have liked anybody to be in that situation ever. But God forbid, if you or any of your friends are ever caught in such a situation, here’s what we think we would have done to perhaps de-escalate the situation or saved ourselves:

DO: Talk Softly And Calmly

DON’T: Anger Is Your Enemy

There is no point in arguing and raising tempers on the road. When you are dealing with unreasonable individuals, such as it was in this case, arguing back and forth with them will solve no issue. Perhaps, speaking to them calmly and apologising for the heck of it could’ve worked. Remember, on two-wheels, you are the one that is in survival mode, always, and you do not need a target on your back.

DO: Step Away And Try To Take Cover

DON’T: Jump In To Save Your Bike

If the situation doesn’t calm down and they aim to get physical, immediately seek shelter or safety for yourself. Don’t remove your safety gear as it can safeguard you from any harm in the situation the opposite party tries to get violent. Leave your bike. Insurance will cover damages and bikes repair faster than your injuries will heal. So, leave them to get their frustration out on your bike. I know, it is your hard earned baby and leaving it sounds so wrong but in that moment, survival is critical.

DO: Try And Get Some Form Of Recording

DON’T: Be Blatant And Get In The Attacker’s Faces

Once you are sure that you are safe and secure, try and get some footage that you were attacked. Don’t be too obvious. As much as action cameras are turning out to be great for capturing beautiful memories, in such situations, they help out catching the criminals. The biker who was attacked used his action camera to get the recording of the attackers and submit it to the police.

DO: Report The Incident To The Police

DON’T: Provide Mis-information Or Leave Any Detail Out

This is pretty straightforward and the police should ideally be helpful in this matter.

While these should help you or your fellow bikers be safe, it all starts before you head out for the ride. Some of the comments on the video have called out the rash riding or overspeeding of bikers. And as a community, it is in our best interest to change that perception. There is already a bad reputation for bikers, especially those with performance bikes. So, let’s be a bit more civilised.

Given notorious elements can get angry at any moment, overtake and get away from the situation in a safe manner. Considering the dangers that get amplified for motorcyclists, being the better guy always helps.

All said and done, the above violence and vandalism by the hooligans is an uncommendable incident. We hope the authorities take strict action against them so an example is set for others. Incidents of road rage and hooliganism have been increasing exponentially in our country and we hope the law and order prevails, so that such incidents are reduced in the near future.
