Will Hero's hybrid tech create another Splendor-like game-changer?
Hero MotoCorp is developing hybrid powertrains for its future two-wheeler lineup, a significant step towards sustainable mobility. This move comes as the industry witnesses innovative solutions like CNG-powered bikes and Yamaha's hybrid technology in their scooters. However, Hero MotoCorp's upcoming launches, including two new scooters, have not hinted at any hybrid technology integration, leaving the timeline and details of their hybrid powertrain plans uncertain.

CEO Niranjan Gupta emphasises that the market will persist in witnessing the emergence of alternative powertrain technologies. He notes that the industry is currently focused on Internal Combustion Engines (ICE) and Electric Vehicles (EVs), with a concerted effort to advance these technologies. Furthermore, Gupta reveals that Hero MotoCorp is actively developing flex fuels and ethanol-based fuel technology, with hybrid technologies also being explored for the long term.

The company is working on multiple powertrain technologies, including hybrid, flex fuels, and ethanol-based fuel technology. Hero MotoCorp aims to improve fuel efficiency and reduce operating costs, offering a range of options to customers.

The two-wheeler market has also seen the recent introduction of CNG-powered models, leaving Hero MotoCorp seemingly lagging in innovative offerings. Apart from Hero, TVS is also reportedly planning on developing a CNG version of the TVS Jupiter scooter. The last big innovation from the brand was the i3S technology, which was introduced several years ago. For Hero, it’s vital to dominate the commuter segment of bikes as it’s its cash cow and with innovative product like the Bajaj Freedom 125, its market share comes under scrutiny.

Hero MotoCorp's electric vehicle business under the Vida brand has struggled to gain traction, unlike ICE brands that have successfully entered the electric space. Despite this, the company plans to launch two new electric models this year. Hero MotoCorp's entry into hybrid technology aims to drive growth, offering customers cleaner options. However, the company must overcome its current electric vehicle challenges to lead the charge towards sustainable mobility.
