The new scooters will be mass market and more affordable than the existing Vida V1
Hero MotoCorp has announced plans to introduce three new electric scooters within the next year. CEO Niranjan Gupta unveiled this strategy at the Hero World 2024 event, emphasising the goal of expanding the company’s electric portfolio.
In the fiscal year 2025, the company aims to launch electric scooters in both the mid-range and economy segments, expanding its existing Vida range. There are plans to target the B2B last-mile delivery segment with the introduction of another electric two-wheeler, recognising the significance of this market. The B2B electric scooter market is witnessing tremendous growth especially in logistics and home delivery business. The new Hero electric scooters will play a crucial role in garnering volumes for the brand as the current Vida V1 is a premium electric scooter, thereby restricting its reach among the masses. With Fame II subsidies dwindling, cost of electric scooters is expected to grow significantly and affordable scooters seems to be the correct strategy. Specs, range and features of the upcoming Hero scooters haven’t been shared yet and we shall find out those details over the course of time.
Apart from the affordable e-scooters, Hero is also working on developing performance electric motorcycles. Hero MotoCorp is developing a new electric bike in collaboration with California-based Zero Motorcycles. The upcoming performance electric motorcycle is still undergoing testing and development and it could be priced around ₹ 3 to 4 lakh (ex-showroom). This new motorcycle is still some time away from hitting production, and it will compete against the Ultraviolette F77.
From the above announcements it’s clear that Hero MotoCorp wants to have a strong EV portfolio to make up for the slow start in the electric two-wheeler space. Given Hero’s vast dealership reach and trust factor it commands in smaller towns, Hero electric two-wheelers will play a key role in expanding the reach of EVs in the Indian market.
Currently Hero has over 100 Vida dealerships across the country and it plans to add another 100 new touch points within the next year.
