Hero’s production slowing down as well as introduction of OBD-2B compliant two-wheelers affected the sales performance.
The fiscal year did not begin well for the two-wheeler industry, especially the motorcycle side of the business. There was an obvious slowdown in general, and certain geopolitical issues definitely played their part. However, the following numbers represent shocking statistics:
April 2024 Sales | April 2025 Sales | Difference
Motorcycles | 11,28,192 | 8,71,666 | -22.7% |
Scooters | 5,81,277 | 5,48,370 | -5.7% |
Mopeds | 41,924 | 38,748 | -7.6% |
2,56,526 fewer motorcycles were sold in April 2025, which as the data suggests is a drop of 22 per cent year-on-year. And the major reason for this poor performance is primarily Hero MotoCorp. The world’s number one two-wheeler brand had slashed down the production of its most popular commuter motorcycles by over half.
April 2024 Production | April 2025 Production | April 2024 Sales | April 2025 Sales | Sales Difference
HF Dawn, HF Deluxe, Passion, Splendor | 4,10,899 | 2,45,927 | 4,21,163 | 2,37,467 | -1,83,696 |
Glamour, Splendor, Xtreme 125R | 54,306 | 27,923 | 53,874 | 29,122 | -24,752 |
Hero selling 2,08,448 fewer motorcycles has impacted the industry massively. Hero has attributed the decline in sales to a planned operational strategy that witnessed the temporary halt in production for a couple of days at four of its facilities: Dharuhera, Gurugram, Haridwar, and Neemrana. It was mentioned that this would benefit streamlining the supply chain as well as allowing the company to carry out scheduled maintenance as well as improvements at the facilities.
As for the rest of the manufacturers, only Bajaj has seen a similarly low performance in domestic sales. The CT and Platina series as well as the 150 cc Pulsars have had noticeable dips. However, Bajaj has balanced its production between domestic sales and exports.
April 2024 Production | April 2025 Production | April 2024 Sales | April 2025 Sales | Sales Difference
Boxer, CT, Discover, Platina | 64,185 | 81,570 | 50,925 | 33,637 | 17,288 |
Boxer, CT 150, Pulsar | 40,350 | 36,484 | 30,608 | 15,028 | 15,580 |
We expect the motorcycle industry to bounce back in May 2025. With Honda and TVS flourishing on domestic sales and Bajaj being the great exporter as it is, Hero will have to fend off the attack on all fronts.
