A speculative look at what India’s favourite scooter should get updated with
Honda's Activa scooter has long been the undisputed king of the Indian two-wheeler market. But with new electric challengers emerging and customer preferences evolving, the iconic Activa is overdue for an update. Here's a closer look at the features that we feel could make their way onto the new HondaActiva 7G, based on industry speculation and consumer expectations.
Safety is paramount, and the next-gen Activa ideally should address a longstanding concern - the drum brakes on the current model. Replacing the front drum brake with a disc brake is a much-anticipated upgrade. This will likely be accompanied by a combi-braking system, ensuring balanced braking force distribution for improved stopping power, especially beneficial for new riders or in slippery conditions. While the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) might not be included initially, the disc brake and combi-braking system are sure to be seen. This shouldn’t require a lot of engineering work for Honda as the Activa 125 already gets a front disc brake as an option and both scooters feature a 12-inch front wheel.
The current analogue-digital instrument cluster on the Activa might be a thing of the past. A fully digital unit is a strong possibility, aligning with the industry-wide shift towards digital displays. This upgrade would offer a cleaner aesthetic, improved readability, and the potential to display a wider range of information like tripmeter, fuel efficiency stats, and maintenance reminders.
The digital instrument cluster could pave the way for smartphone integration via Bluetooth connectivity. This opens up a plethora of possibilities, such as ride stats, locate your scooter, geo fencing and more, making the 2024 Activa even more appealing to its target audience. You can also get message/call alerts and even control music on the fly.
Connected technology could take things a step further by introducing turn-by-turn navigation displayed directly on the instrument cluster. A user-friendly and intuitive navigation system would be a major convenience for both new and experienced Activa riders.Given that many ICE scooters have already received navigation, it’s time for Honda to step up its game.
One of the common complaints about the Honda Activa 6G is the limited under-seat storage space. The next-generation Activa can address this by offering a larger boot capacity. While this could result in a slightly increased seat height, the added practicality would likely be welcomed by riders. Imagine being able to store your full face helmet helmet and other essentials more comfortably, eliminating the need for additional luggage carriers. An increase in storage space would not only be a functional improvement but also a potential selling point for Honda.
These are the bunch of updates that we would like to see on the Activa 7G as the current scooter has got most of the mechanical bits sorted such as a very smooth and refined engine, good suspension and decent agility. On the cosmetic front, we expect only minor changes as Honda will want to extend the ‘Activa face’ which is hugely popular among the masses. Whether we would see the arrival of the new Honda Activa or the Activa 7G in 2024 remains to be seen, but we hope India’s favourite scooter does get updated soon.
