The proposed merger would involve Honda and Nissan forming a new holding company to oversee operations under a combined entity.
Honda Motor Co. and Nissan Motor Co., two of Japan's leading automakers, are reportedly preparing to initiate negotiations on a potential merger, according to a report from Nikkei on Tuesday. The discussions aim to address increasing competition in the global electric vehicle (EV) market, particularly from Chinese automakers and established EV manufacturers like Tesla Inc.
The proposed merger would involve Honda and Nissan forming a new holding company to oversee operations under a combined entity. According to the report, the two companies are expected to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to commence formal talks, including discussions on shared equity stakes.
The move reflects broader industry pressures, as traditional automakers struggle to sustain profitability while shifting towards electrified technologies. The growing dominance of Chinese EV manufacturers and Tesla's continued market leadership have intensified competition, forcing legacy carmakers to reconsider their strategies. If successful, the merger would create one of the largest auto groups globally and potentially offer both Honda and Nissan a stronger footing in the EV market through shared resources, technology, and manufacturing capabilities.
The Nikkei report further suggested that Mitsubishi Motors Co. may eventually join the holding company. Nissan, currently the largest shareholder in Mitsubishi Motors with a 24 per cent stake, could facilitate this inclusion. The potential integration of Mitsubishi Motors would further expand the alliance's production scale and market reach.
Details such as the specific stake distribution between Honda and Nissan, as well as the operational structure of the new entity, are yet to be decided, the report said. Honda and Nissan have not yet commented on the report. Reuters noted that both automakers were unavailable for immediate response regarding the news.
