Honda and QuantumScape have signed a multi-year joint agreement to develop and manufacture solid-state batteries for cars, motorcycles, and power equipment.
Honda and US-based battery manufacturer QuantumScape have officially entered into a multi-year joint research agreement to co-develop and commercialise solid-state batteries for next-generation electric vehicles and diverse mobility applications.
This milestone announcement marks QuantumScape's second major automotive OEM partnership, following its long-standing collaboration with the Volkswagen Group. The tie-up was finalised after Honda conducted an in-depth, hands-on technical study of QuantumScape's proprietary solid-state technology platform, benchmarking its performance metrics directly against rival battery platforms in the industry.
During this evaluation process, the technology demonstrated compelling and unique advantages, leading leadership at Honda's Research Centre of Excellence to conclude that the platform holds massive potential to add value across a wide range of products, well beyond basic automotive usage.
The strategic partnership is engineered to focus heavily on accelerating both solid-state battery development and scalable manufacturing methods. Beyond traditional passenger electric cars, Honda envisions deploying these advanced solid-state cells across its extensive product portfolio, including motorcycles, outdoor power equipment, and large-scale energy storage systems.
This collaboration complements Honda's existing internal electrification timeline, which includes the pilot production of all-solid-state batteries initiated at its specialised Sakura manufacturing facility in Japan. While the carmaker has previously termed all-solid-state batteries as a definitive game-changer for the modern electric era, the integration of QuantumScape's tech arrives at a time when multiple global manufacturers are carefully calibrating their broader long-term electrification roll-out strategies.
The technological advantages of QuantumScape's platform over standard lithium-ion setups have already been demonstrated in high-performance test applications. The group's QSE-5 B-sample cells, which utilise a lithium-metal anode combined with a proprietary ceramic separator, were recently showcased inside a heavily modified, fully electric Ducati V21L prototype vehicle.
This solid-state architecture delivers massive improvements in overall volumetric energy density, high-speed fast-charging capabilities, thermal safety parameters, and long-term lifecycle durability. Technical specifications for the QSE-5 B-sample reveal an exceptional energy density of 844 Wh/L, allowing the cell to fast-charge from ten percent to eighty percent capacity in just 12.2 minutes.
To transition this technology from low-volume laboratory testing to true mass production, QuantumScape is relying on its newly operational Eagle production line. This specialised manufacturing line incorporates an automated, ultra-fast separator production process known internally as Cobra. The company has confirmed that the Cobra equipment is the critical operational catalyst that will finally enable these high-density solid-state batteries to be manufactured efficiently at a true gigawatt-hour scale.
