The company thinks this could have significant impact on the commercial, shipping, and logistics sectors.
Honda R&D, a subsidiary of Honda Motor Company, has announced the development of a prototype in-motion wireless charging system that can deliver power to electric vehicles while they are being driven. The company says this could enable a whole new era of electric mobility. In-motion wireless power delivery could eliminate or greatly reduce the need to stop and wait while an EV is charging. Beyond passenger vehicles, the company thinks this could have significant impact on the commercial, shipping, and logistics sectors.
Working together with Taisei Corporation and Taisei Rotec Corporation, Honda R&D has developed what it calls the “underlying technology for a magnetic coupling wireless power transfer road system”. Research began in 2025, and the companies say they will construct a test roadway at the Taisei Group’s Future Technology Field facility in Japan in late 2026. Demonstrations on public roads are currently planned to begin in or after April 2027.
Taisei Corp has developed the power supply system, Taisei Rotec is looking after road construction, and Honda R&D is leading development of the transmitter and receiver units embedded in roads and attached to vehicles. Together, the companies have undertaken performance and durability testing. So far, the team has verified their designs and engineering for road construction methods and pavement structures that will allow for the use of high-power DC-based wireless electricity transmission.
According to the research team, the power distribution system will be capable of up to 150 kW of stable, continuous wireless power transmission. Road structures will be capable of handling constant traffic including heavily loaded trucks, and the embedded systems will be easy to install, maintain, and upgrade.
Real-world testing will allow Honda and Taisei engineers to evaluate long-term durability through load tests equivalent to one million wheel-loads (at 49 kN load per wheel) using actual vehicles. The performance and electromagnetic characteristics of the wireless power distribution system also have to be tested in real-world conditions.
Challenges include dealing with uneven road surfaces, ensuring stable performance with fast-moving vehicles, simplifying components and wiring, and withstanding long-term use.
