Owners of the 2024 Honda Prologue (above) and 2024 Acura ZDX, both manufactured by American Honda Motor Co, could lose critical information while driving.
As screens replace analogue instruments in more and more cars, and dependence on software-defined features increases, reliability is critical. However, over 65,000 owners of the Honda Prologue and Acura ZDX in the USA are facing a recall over software faults that could cause the digital instrument cluster to suddenly go blank while these cars are in motion, leaving drivers without essential information including the speedometer, turn indicators, and fault alerts. The reverse camera view might also fail to be displayed on the central infotainment screen.
A filing by the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) dated late February shows that 65,135 cars sold by American Honda Motor Co have been recalled – 45,562 units of the Honda Prologue midsize electric SUV manufactured between October 2023 and December 2024, as well as 19,573 units of the Acura ZDX luxury midsize SUV manufactured between December 2023 and January 2025.
Six independent software defects related to the cars’ Radio Control Modules have been detected, each able to cause the issues with their instrument clusters and central infotainment screens due to a “processing error”. The failures might happen intermittently on affected cars, and can be fixed with a restart. Losing critical information could put drivers and the people around them at risk due to a loss of situational awareness, as per the NHTSA filing.
According to Honda, only one percent of the cars in these batches are estimated to suffer from the defect. The company has been investigating the problem since June 2024, but was not able to recreate or diagnose the cause of it till December 2025. As of February this year, the company has received 148 related warranty claims but no reports of injuries or death caused by this particular problem.
Registered owners will be asked to voluntarily take their cars to an authorised Honda dealership for a software update, beginning next month. While the Acura ZDX has since been discontinued, Honda says units of the Honda Prologue manufactured from January 2025 onwards have shipped with the newer software.
