Honda’s EV expansion plans in the two-wheeler segment will see India at the epicentre of it all.
At its annual business briefing earlier today, Honda revealed its future plans for the next five years. Electric two-wheelers will continue to be one of its prime pursuits, and the Japanese aim to be the number one manufacturer in the world. Honda’s dedicated EV manufacturing plant in India will drive production primarily. This plant in Karnataka will become operational in 2028. This new plant is located near Honda’s Narassapura plant and will initially manufacture 4 kWh battery-equipped commuter two-wheelers.
According to the plans, Honda plans to develop a super modular platform that can be easily tweaked. Hence, just by tweaking battery modules, front and rear panels (along with their frame members), Honda can produce a number of models. Honda claims that this will make the plant highly efficient while being very cost-effective in the process.
While the brand has showcased more than a couple of EV concepts over the past few years, the Activa e: and the QC1 will be the key models of focus now. Both will be responsible for making Honda a popular brand in the electric mobility space.
Electric motorcycles will also be manufactured at this very plant, and these products will be commuter bikes equivalent to 100 cc bikes. However, details about the same are still limited. The brand had earlier revealed two radical looking electric concept two-wheelers last year at EICMA 2024. One was naked and the other a maxi-scooter. Will these two concepts see the light of production in the next five years, and eventually be manufactured in India too, remains to be seen.
