HPCL and Tata Motors have partnered to pilot a used lubricant recycling programme in India. The initiative focuses on converting hazardous waste oil into re-refined base oil to support circular economy goals.

Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) and Tata Motors have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to pilot a structured model for the responsible collection and recycling of used automotive lubricants. This collaboration aims to address sustainability challenges and ensure compliance with the evolving Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) framework in India.

The initiative focuses on establishing an organised and traceable system for managing used oil, which is classified as hazardous waste. By streamlining the collection, storage, and recycling processes, the partners intend to convert waste oil into high quality re-refined base oil. This process is expected to improve resource efficiency and significantly reduce environmental risks associated with improper disposal.

Under the agreement, HPCL will lead the aggregation and transportation of used lubricants through authorised channels to registered recyclers. Tata Motors will utilise its extensive authorised service network to facilitate structured collection and encourage responsible disposal practices across its ecosystem. The pilot project will be rolled out in select states and overseen by a joint committee from both organisations to monitor progress and assess future scalability.

Ch Srinivas, Executive Director of Lubes at HPCL, stated that reintegrating re-refined base oil into finished lubricants is a vital step toward achieving true circularity and reducing the carbon footprint of their operations. Vikram Agrawal, Head of Parts and Services at Tata Motors, added that the partnership with a trusted ally like HPCL allows the company to take a meaningful step toward organised recycling at scale, which is essential for preventing long term environmental harm.
