Stellantis has announced that its Jeep subsidiary will develop a sport utility vehicle on a Tata Motors platform, with production planned in India through the existing partnership between the two companies. The model is scheduled to enter production in 2028 and will come out of the facility that Tata Motors and Stellantis operate together near Pune.
The plan was outlined at Stellantis’ 2026 Investor Day. This vehicle programme is aimed at export markets, with Stellantis indicating a target of more than 50 countries. Export volumes of up to one lakh units by 2028 are under consideration as part of the business case.
The SUV will use a vehicle platform supplied by Tata Motors, which already underpins some of the company’s sport utility models in the domestic market. Stellantis has said the platform supports all-wheel drive and electrified powertrains, which allows Jeep to plan both internal combustion and battery-based versions over time.
This project builds on a partnership that began with Fiat India Automobiles Private Limited, the 50:50 venture between Tata Motors and Fiat that now sits within Stellantis. The jointly operated Ranjangaon plant near Pune has produced more than 1.37 million vehicles since the venture started, and has the capacity to build about 2,22,000 units a year. Four Jeep models and three Tata Motors passenger vehicles are currently manufactured at the site.
In February 2026, Stellantis and Tata Motors marked 20 years of their joint venture by signing a memorandum of understanding to explore further collaboration in manufacturing, engineering, and supply chains in India and overseas markets. The companies said the agreement would guide future projects, including platform and powertrain sharing.
Commenting on the link-up, Grégoire Olivier, Chief Operating Officer for Stellantis Asia Pacific, said, “Tata Motors has been a Stellantis partner for more than 20 years.”
Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, said, “We look forward to deepening this relationship with Stellantis in the years ahead.”
The two companies are also studying wider engine cooperation under the same framework. Options include the use of Tata Motors’ 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine in Jeep models and extended rights for Tata Motors to produce Stellantis’ 2.0-litre Multijet diesel engine in India.
