Huawei and Xiaomi highlight Chinese tech firms’ EV prowess. These brands offer premium features and affordable pricing in China’s emerging market.
Chinese tech firms are reshaping the electric vehicle (EV) industry, leveraging innovation to challenge global rivals. Xiaomi’s YU7 SUV, launched in end-June, secured over three lakh orders in 72 hours.
But Xiaomi isn't the only one enjoying success in this space. Huawei’s Harmony Intelligent Mobility Alliance (HIMA) reports its Maextro S800 luxury sedan, launched on 30 May, amassed over 6,500 orders in its first month.
It is more than twice as expensive as the Xiaomi YU7, and competes with premium models like the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class and BYD’s Yangwang U7, offering advanced technology at a lower cost.
Undoubtedly inspired by Rolls Royce, the Maxetro S800 is built on the Xuanwu architecture. It has 5,480mm length, 3,370mm wheelbase, and a 0.206 drag coefficient. Its smart doors, using lidar and radar, adjust to avoid obstacles, while six dual-tone colour options enhance its premium appeal.
Available in four- or five-seat layouts, the S800 features three dashboard screens, a head-up display, and a starlight dome. With 43 speakers delivering 2,920W and active noise cancellation, cabin noise is just 56.7dB at 60 km/h, ensuring a serene experience.
The S800 offers pure electric (EV) and extended-range electric (EREV) variants. The EV, with a 97kWh battery, achieves a 702 km range and 0-100 km/h in 4.3 seconds. The EREV, with a 65kWh battery and 1.5-litre generator, offers up to 1,333 km combined range.
Huawei expects to sell 100,000 units of the Maextro 800 yearly. It is manufactured in collaboration with JAC, a popular Chinese carmaker. The Maextro 800's deliveries begin in August in China, and it has the potential to position Huawei as a serious luxury EV player.
