Hyundai Nexo hydrogen FCEV earns five-star Euro NCAP rating with strong occupant protection.

Hyundai Motor Company has announced that its second-generation Nexo hydrogen fuel-cell electric SUV has earned a five-star rating in the latest Euro NCAP safety tests.

The Nexo, which produces only water vapour as exhaust, scored highly across Euro NCAP's four assessment categories: 90% in adult occupant protection and 85% in child occupant protection.

In frontal offset and full-width barrier tests, the passenger compartment remained stable, offering good protection for knees, femurs, and critical body areas. The vehicle achieved maximum points in side barrier impacts and provided effective far-side restraint via its centre airbag. Whiplash protection was rated good for front and rear seats.

Child safety performance was strong, with dummies representing six- and ten-year-olds receiving good head, neck, and chest protection in frontal and side tests. The Nexo also supports secure child restraint installation and includes clear front passenger airbag deactivation indicators.

Additional features recognised include an advanced eCall system, post-crash braking to prevent secondary impacts, and verified door/window functionality in submersion scenarios.

The five-star outcome builds on the first-generation Nexo's achievement as the initial fuel-cell vehicle tested by Euro NCAP in 2018, which also secured top marks under then-current protocols.

Hyundai states the latest result highlights ongoing improvements in fuel-cell technology, structural design, and active safety systems.

In India, Hyundai Motor India is conducting feasibility studies for hydrogen technology introduction. Earlier this year, the company partnered with Indian Oil Corporation Limited on a two-year pilot project using one Nexo unit for real-world trials covering approximately 40,000 km. The initiative evaluates performance, reliability, and total cost of ownership under local conditions.
