As per various reports, Hyundai India has to pay a fine of ₹2,800 crore for breaching the fleet emission levels.

Hyundai Motor India Limited has issued a statement denying reports that it could face a penalty of ₹2,800 crore for breaching fleet emission levels. The South Korean manufacturer said these reports are based on “extrapolations” and are not based on facts or applicable laws.

Furthermore, Hyundai India said it has not received any formal or informal intimation regarding this breach or the penalty it reportedly has to pay. Hyundai said it “categorically denies the contents” of such reports mentioning its name.

Hyundai India also says it is “committed to ensuring the highest standards of compliance and transparency in all its disclosures. It will continue to promptly inform the exchanges of any material information as per regulatory requirements.” Hyundai also says it remains “ steadfast in its commitment to compliance and to contributing to the sustainability goals of the automotive industry.”

Various media reports suggest that Hyundai and other manufacturers like Mahindra, Kia, Honda, Renault, Skoda, Nissan and Force Motors are liable to pay a fine of ₹7,300 crore (combined). Reportedly, Hyundai is the biggest culprit, facing a fine of ₹2,800 crore. It is said to be followed by Mahindra (₹1,800 crore) and Kia (₹1,300 crore). These fines follow the stricter CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency) norms that came into effect in 2023.
