In a significant development, Hyundai Motor Group Executive Chair, Euisun Chung, met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss matters concerning the future of mobility. The meeting revolved around India's evolving market, particularly in the areas of sustainable and future mobility. Hyundai, which has long been a major player in the Indian automotive market, has taken note of India's growing importance due to its expanding economy and progressive regulatory environment. Hyundai views India’s ongoing economic reforms and development initiatives as a crucial enabler for investment and future growth in the sector.
Hyundai Motor Group has already established a strong presence in India through its subsidiary, Hyundai Motor India Ltd. (HMIL). However, with India's increased focus on initiatives like electrification, renewable energy, and sustainable transportation, the company is seeking to align its strategy with the country's future trajectory. Hyundai’s emphasis on India also reflects the growing importance of the nation as a key player in the global supply chain for electric vehicles (EVs), batteries, and mobility solutions.
A major highlight of the meeting was Hyundai’s formal invitation to Prime Minister Modi for the opening of Hyundai's new manufacturing facility in Pune, Maharashtra. The new facility will boost Hyundai's production capacity and strengthen India's role as a global manufacturing hub. The Pune plant is part of Hyundai's strategy to expand its presence in India and meet the growing demand for vehicles, including electric vehicles. It is also seen as a critical step toward advancing India's "Make in India" initiative, a key focus of the Modi government. Hyundai's Pune plant will commence operations in 2025.
HMIL has been producing cars in India since it entered into the market in 1996 and is currently one of the country’s largest automobile manufacturers. The new plant is seen as part of Hyundai’s broader commitment to expanding its manufacturing footprint in India, while also increasing exports to global markets from Indian facilities.
Additionally, Hyundai has expressed its intention to be a key partner in India’s ambitious “Viksit Bharat 2047” vision, which outlines the country’s path toward becoming a developed nation by 2047, marking 100 years of India’s independence. The automotive sector, especially in areas of clean energy and electric mobility, is expected to play a crucial role in this transformation, and Hyundai aims to be at the forefront of these changes.
