According to the FADA sales report, the auto retail sector achieved nearly flat month-on-month expansion at 0.02 per cent in August.
The Indian automotive retail industry witnessed minimal growth during August, with sales figures revealing stagnant monthly performance while maintaining steady annual progress, according to official data by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA).
According to the FADA report, the auto retail sector achieved nearly flat month-on-month expansion at 0.02 per cent in August, accompanied by a moderate 2.84 per cent annual increase compared to the previous year.
The motorcycle and scooter category demonstrated positive momentum with a 1.34 per cent monthly gain and 2.18 per cent yearly improvement. This performance was bolstered by increased consumer interest during major festivals including Onam and Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations.
Despite this growth, the segment faced headwinds from excessive monsoon rainfall and consumer hesitancy regarding the upcoming GST restructuring. Many potential buyers postponed their purchasing decisions while anticipating likely price reductions.
The passenger car segment experienced a 1.63 per cent monthly decline, with dealer stockpiles reaching approximately 56 days of inventory. Although customer bookings remained robust, weather-related supply chain disruptions and cautious consumer sentiment ahead of GST 2.0 implementation hampered retail performance.
FADA noted that severe rainfall and flooding in certain regions reduced showroom visits, while inconsistent availability of popular vehicle models and aggressive manufacturer sales targets created additional market pressures.
"However, demand fundamentals remain intact, supported by festive sentiment and strong customer interest in both ICE and EV models," FADA said.
The commercial vehicle category declined 1.11 per cent on a monthly basis while achieving substantial 8.55 per cent annual growth, driven primarily by expanding e-commerce operations and vehicle replacement requirements. Market confidence weakened toward month-end due to GST-related uncertainties.
Agricultural tractor sales demonstrated remarkable performance, fueled by favorable monsoon conditions, improved rural financial liquidity, and positive crop forecasts. Conversely, three-wheeler vehicles recorded the steepest monthly decline at 7.47 per cent.
Addressing the impact of tax policy changes, FADA President C S Vigneshwar stated: "The announcement has strengthened buyer optimism, with many families preferring to align their purchases with the forthcoming reduced GST rates."
This reflects consumer confidence in government policy, which has temporarily shifted rather than eliminated demand to September, he explained.
Vigneshwar anticipates strong performance during the upcoming festival period, supported by the automotive retail sector's fundamental strength and GST reform implementation.
"Dealers remain confident that September will herald the start of an accelerated growth cycle, powered by policy tailwinds and festive demand," he said.
