Indian subsidiary of the German major aims to be among the Top 15 by 2030.
2025 saw the BMW Group’s post record car sales in India. It sold 18,001 units last year, which translates to a 14% growth over 2024. This performance also helped the German major’s Indian subsidiary enter the Top 20 club of BMW entities globally. A stronger sales strategy, including new model introductions like the 2 Series, iX3, and some slowing down of luxury car markets in the West contributed to the rise in the ranking. It was a “few ranks” lower in 2024.
“And the plan is to go to the top 15 by the end of this decade,” Hardeep Singh Brar, President & CEO, BMW Group India tells Acko Drive. The other benefit of breaking into the top 15-20 markets is the gain of “a lot of attention” at the global headquarters, which may also result in greater support in building the subsidiary’s business. BMW has business operations in 140 countries, though not every market has a separate subsidiary.
Around 52,000 luxury passenger vehicles were retailed in India during 2025. Mercedes-Benz leads the pack with an estimated 37% market share, with BMW at 33.5%, and Jaguar Land Rover with a share of around 12%.
While it is the number two player in the overall luxury car segment, BMW claims a leading position in the emerging luxury EV space. It sold 3,753 units of its electric cars during 2025.
The luxury segment’s share in the overall passenger vehicle industry has remained quite low, at 1.1% or so, in 2025. However, BMW India is bullish about the segment’s journey ahead. “I think everybody knows that India is the next frontier which can explode from a luxury viewpoint,” says Brar. And that is why “there's a lot of focus from Munich (BMW’s HQ) on India”.

For the two-wheeler business, BMW Motorrad, India as a market sits on a higher rank than for the car business. It entered the list of Top 10 subsidiaries in 2022.
The BMW Group plans for “more action in India”. This calendar year, it plans to have almost 30 product interventions here. These include 6 new models, 4 model replacements, and facelifts for 17 models between the car brands of BMW and Mini. BMW Motorrad has planned two launches – 450 GS, and a 1000 cc model, for this year.
