India’s domestic passenger vehicle sales rose 8.3% to push FY26 volumes to a record 4.7 million units. Maruti Suzuki led, followed by Mahindra and Tata.
India's domestic passenger vehicle sales recorded a strong 16% growth in March 2026, pushing the annual volumes to a record 4.7 million units in the just-ended FY26.
This 8.3% rise from 4.34 million units in the previous year was mainly driven by enhanced affordability following GST cuts implemented on 22 September, 2025, and the launch of several attractive new models.
The Centre's tax reduction prompted manufacturers to lower prices, unlocking pent-up demand especially in the second half of the fiscal. While the first half remained challenging, GST 2.0 and a strong festive season spurred double-digit growth in H2.
Maruti Suzuki retained its dominant position as the clear market leader. The company posted its highest-ever domestic sales of 1.82 million units, marking a 3.4% increase. Maruti ended the year with strong order books of 190,000 vehicles and healthy network stocks.
Mahindra & Mahindra climbed to the second spot with record sales of 660,276 units, up nearly 20% year-on-year. The SUV-focused portfolio benefited immensely from the demand rebound and festive buying.
Tata Motors secured the third position with 631,387 units sold, registering 14% growth. Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, described FY26 as a landmark year driven by strong SUV and electric vehicle performance.
Hyundai Motor India followed in fourth place with 584,906 units, though it saw a marginal decline of about 2.3% compared to the previous year. Toyota Kirloskar Motor rounded off the top five with impressive 24% growth, supported by sustained demand and new offerings.
In March 2026 alone, Tata Motors led the pack among non-Maruti players with 66,192 units, followed by Mahindra at 60,272 and Hyundai at 55,064 units. Toyota also posted healthy March sales of 35,125 units.
The strong performance across segments, particularly SUVs, reflects improved consumer sentiment. Overall, FY26 has set a new benchmark for India's passenger vehicle industry, with the top five manufacturers playing a pivotal role in this achievement.
