India's two-wheeler sector has kicked off the new financial year on solid ground, with roughly 1.92 million units registered in April 2026 which is a a 12.9 per cent rise compared to the same month a year ago, said figures from JATO Dynamics India. The monthly picture told a slightly different story. Registrations dipped 2.3 per cent against March 2026, though analysts attributed the softening to the predictable lull that follows the financial year-end buying surge rather than any structural weakness in demand.
JATO said the figures point to sustained retail appetite across both urban centres and rural areas, with FY27 beginning on what the consultancy called a "stable footing". Steady consumer confidence, accessible vehicle financing and improved product availability were all cited as supportive factors.
Ravi Bhatia, President of JATO Dynamics India – Global Automotive Intelligence, said the April numbers were broadly in line with expectations. "The marginal month-on-month decline is seasonal and expected," he said in a statement.
"The year-on-year growth, on a higher base, is the real story — and it remains firmly intact."
Hero MotoCorp held on to its position as the country's biggest two-wheeler manufacturer, recording registrations of more than 5.52 lakh units during the month. Honda came in second with upwards of 4.72 lakh units. TVS Motor turned in a particularly strong performance, posting year-on-year growth exceeding 18 per cent, while Yamaha also recorded higher volumes.
Suzuki bucked the trend with a slight decline.
On the model front, the Hero Splendor Plus again topped the overall registrations table. The Honda Activa led the scooter segment, with the TVS Jupiter in second place, and the Bajaj Pulsar remained the best-performing sporty commuter motorcycle.
Motorcycles continued to dominate the overall mix, accounting for close to 59 per cent of all units registered. Scooters contributed around 30 per cent, while electric scooters made up nearly nine per cent, a figure JATO said reflects the ongoing shift towards battery-powered personal transport. Mopeds, large-displacement bikes and electric motorcycles remained niche segments with comparatively modest volumes.
Among major cities, Delhi recorded the highest two-wheeler registrations in April, ahead of Bengaluru and Pune. Chennai and Mumbai also featured prominently, despite the cost and congestion challenges that characterise those markets.
At state level, Uttar Pradesh led the tally, followed by Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Bihar.
