Instagram Edits app is currently available for pre-order on Apple's App Store.
Meta-owned Instagram unveiled plans for a new mobile video editing app called Edits as TikTok faced service interruptions across the US. Instagram Head Adam Mosseri revealed the new software in an announcement video, stating: "Now, there's a lot going on in the world right now and no matter what happens, we think it's our job to create the most compelling creative tools for those of you who make videos for not just Instagram but for platforms out there, as we can."
The new Instagram Edits app, currently available for pre-order on Apple's App Store, is Meta's latest move into the video creation space. While the App Store indicates a March 13 release date, Instagram boss Mosseri suggested the first version could arrive as early as February.
Edits will feature capabilities including AI animation, generative captions, and various creative tools such as text overlays, sound effects, and filters.
While Edits is currently limited to iOS pre-orders, Instagram plans to expand availability to Android devices through the Google Play Store at a later date. The timing of the announcement coincided with service disruptions affecting both TikTok and its affiliated editing software CapCut, though Edits operates independently as a Meta-owned product.
The platform will support videos up to 10 minutes in length at 1080p resolution. "It's not for people who are using desktop apps. It's not for people who look for templates. It's for people who use their phone to make short-form videos," Mosseri explained.
The Instagram chief acknowledged that the initial release will be "incomplete" but promised ongoing updates and improvements. Users will be able to create and edit videos, share content directly to Instagram, and monitor their Reels analytics through the app.
An upcoming update to Instagram's Reels feed will incorporate content based on your friends' interactions. The revised feed will display videos that members of your social circle have engaged with through likes and comments, offering insights into their viewing preferences.
It's important to note that this feature works both ways -- your own liked videos will become visible to your connections. The update also introduces a new social feature that enables users to initiate conversations about specific Reels that their friends have liked.
