Intel held an AI Cockpit Innovation Experience event in Shenzhen, China, this week, where it announced its entry into the automotive GPU market. The company sees a growing market for compute solutions in the automotive segment, as car manufacturers move to implement digital cockpits and advanced in-car experiences. Along with the company’s existing solutions for software-defined vehicles, Intel says this new discrete GPU will allow manufacturers to build a single platform that can be scaled to suit different models and variants depending on the target experience.
The new Intel Arc Graphics for Automotive A760A GPU will enable modern AI applications and even games to run on a car’s onboard computer. The company says manufacturers will be able to offer a high degree of personalisation, with intuitive interactions and optimised drive conditions. The single solution is being pitched to car manufacturers as easy to develop for, with a single, scalable software stack using open standards. In addition, Intel says this will allow brands to differentiate themselves in a crowded market.
Suggested in-car applications include voice and gesture recognition, working on the go, and even using natural language to chat with a vehicle about its status. Entertainment could be prioritised as well, with support for rendering 3D graphics on up to seven HD screens. Gaming is another obvious area of development, with the Arc GPU enabling AAA-quality titles to run even with other AI-rich applications being used simultaneously.
“China's rapid electric vehicle development cycles and advanced technological adoption make it an ideal testing ground for our next-generation technologies”, said Jack Weast, vice president and general manager of Intel Automotive, at the event.
According to Intel, the new Arc A760A GPU will be deployed commercially as soon as next year, though no car brands have yet been named as partners. It is based on the existing Intel Arc A750 desktop GPU, which uses Intel’s first-gen Xe-HPG ‘Alchemist’ architecture. It features 28 Xe cores, 28 ray tracing units, and 16GB of GDDR6 RAM, with a 225W peak power rating.
