The new platform for affordable smart TVs promises AI-powered content suggestions, support for multiple languages, and a fluid UI.
After taking on the set-top box, feature phone and laptop spaces, Reliance Jio now wants to create its own ecosystem for smart TVs and streaming content. The company has just announced its new JioTele OS platform which will be aimed at affordable models and has been designed to meet the needs of Indian viewers. Thomson, Kodak, BPL and JVC are among the first OEMs to launch smart TVs running on the new JioTele OS platform. Their new models will hit Indian store shelves on February 21.
Jio promises a customisable, premium user experience and easy access to content in multiple Indian languages. Content recommendations will be AI-enhanced and personalised to each user’s viewing habits and preferences. 4K streaming video will be available, and Jio says the experience will be lag-free. In addition to TV channels, the platform should support major streaming apps and cloud-based gaming. Regular software updates will take care of security concerns, and add future functionality including support for more and newer apps. A single remote will let users find content and switch between all available sources.
The conglomerate recently unveiled JioHotstar, a new streaming video app born from the merger of JioCinema and Disney+ Hotstar, which now hosts thousands of hours of content across multiple Indian and international franchises, and will broadcast live sporting events.
Although not named, it’s likely that the JioGamesCloud subscription service will also be integrated, allowing users to play some modern high-end games without needing a powerful PC or smartphone.
Specifics of the platform and its capabilities haven’t been announced yet. TV OEMs are likely to announce more details when they are ready to launch their products next week. This announcement comes after Jio unveiled what was then called “Jio TV OS” at Reliance Industries' annual general meeting in late 2024, which was also said to be an ecosystem to bring streaming content to the biggest screen in users’ homes. At that time, the platform was said to include a Jio App Store and interactive voice assistant called Hello Jio.
