The Skoda-Volkswagen alliance has been actively seeking an Indian collaborator for over 12 months.
JSW MG Motor India and Skoda Auto Volkswagen India (SAVWIPL) have entered preliminary discussions for collaboration on vehicle platforms, propulsion systems and capital investment, according to sources with knowledge of the situation who spoke to Autocar Professional. The dialogue emerges as numerous manufacturers operating in India seek shared architectural solutions to offset substantial development expenditure, enhance domestic component sourcing and establish production volume for forthcoming electrified vehicle programmes.
Two automotive industry executives have revealed that both organisations have "signalled interest" in evaluating whether technical or commercial cooperation could prove viable. "These are very early interactions, not negotiations," one source was quoted as saying, emphasising that the conversations aim to determine whether sufficient strategic compatibility exists to advance the concept.
The exploratory discussions carry particular weight given the circumstances surrounding them.
The Skoda-Volkswagen alliance has been actively seeking an Indian collaborator for over 12 months, with previous reports suggesting that the European automotive group had approached JSW Group to examine enhanced cooperation for its Indian operations. That outreach stemmed from Skoda-VW's requirement for financial backing, domestic manufacturing capacity and assistance with its forthcoming product development phase, particularly as the organisation prepared to commit to an entirely new India-centric platform strategy necessitating approximately €1 billion in capital expenditure.
A tripartite JSW–SAIC–Skoda-VW organisational structure represents one scenario being evaluated during the preliminary assessment phase, sources indicate. Such an arrangement carries evident strategic rationale: Skoda-VW and SAIC maintain an established collaborative relationship in China, facilitating technology exchange and vehicle sourcing arrangements.
Individuals familiar with the discussions stated that SAIC remains "open to collaborative structures" to safeguard its extended-term Indian market position, especially as regulatory and geopolitical challenges intensify.
This development holds particular relevance as concurrent negotiations between JSW Auto and Chery have encountered obstacles concerning data accessibility and intellectual property transfer -- illustrating the complexity Indian corporations face when attempting to secure technology licensing rights from Chinese original equipment manufacturers.
While the JSW Group develops its joint venture with MG Motor India, JSW is simultaneously establishing JSW Auto as a distinct entity designed to introduce its own battery-electric vehicle brand by 2027–28 utilising products and technical know-how from Chery.
A JSW–MG–SAIC–Skoda-VW arrangement, should it progress beyond exploratory discussions, would rank among the most unconventional intercontinental automotive collaborations in India, merging European design and engineering expertise, Chinese electrification technology and Indian manufacturing scale with domestic market access within a unified framework.
The automotive sector in India has witnessed growing interest in collaborative ventures as manufacturers confront mounting pressure to localise production, meet stringent emission regulations and compete in an increasingly electrified market whilst managing development costs that frequently exceed individual company capabilities.
