India-made Triumphs remain the best of the rest, nearly outselling the rest of the competition put together
Modern retro roadsters have been gaining a lot of prominence of late. In the past 12 months, we have seen a lot of activity in this space with as many as 7-8 new motorcycles arriving in the Indian market. And this is how the sales numbers stack up for the sub-500 cc space in July 2024:
Models | July 2024 | July 2023 |
---|---|---|
Royal Enfield Classic 350 | 21373 | 24889 |
Royal Enfield Hunter 350 | 14091 | 17813 |
Royal Enfield Bullet 350 | 9949 | 5313 |
Royal Enfield Meteor 350 | 7901 | 8243 |
Royal Enfield Guerrilla 450 | 1469 | 0 |
Triumph 400s | 3101 | 477 |
Harley-Davidson X440 | 816 | 0 |
Hero Mavrick 440 | 269 | 0 |
Honda CB350 H’ness | 1314 | 3509 |
Honda CB350 | 1011 | 0 |
No prizes for guessing, the Royal Enfield Classic 350 remains the top of the charts by a handsome amount. The Classic 350 might have seen a minor overall dip in sales, it could be due to the fact that Royal Enfield might be adjusting the supply chain to make way for the updated 2024 version that was revealed earlier this month. Find out what the updated Classic 350 receives in this story.
Royal Enfield enjoys much success here with all of its J-series motorcycles. The Hunter 350’s accessible price point, the Bullet’s old school charm and the Meteor 350’s spirited urban cruising character make it such delectable choices. While the Hunter 350 isn’t a spectacular motorcycle in itself, the mere accessibility that the motorcycle offers and a gateway experience into the Royal Enfield folklore helps it earn a lot of audiences.
While Royal Enfield’s dominance in the segment doesn’t seem to be taking a hit, Triumph is steadily emerging as the best of the rest. While we do not have individual sales data of the Speed 400 and the Scrambler 400X, the two combined have managed to outsell the competition from Honda and Hero-Harley-Davidson by a serious margin. In fact, the 400 cc Triumphs sold 309 units less than the other four motorcycles’ sales performance put together. The above data shows the cut-throat pricing along with a great product has helped Triumph establish its presence in just over a year in the Indian market.
The Classic Legends motorcycles from Jawa and Yezdi don’t feature in this list as the parent company doesn’t share its production/sales data with SIAM. Hence, while the new Jawa 350 and improved Jawas and Yezdis have enhanced the company’s sales performance, the exact data is yet unknown.
