The UPSIDA has identified a 500-acre site near Bhimsen for developing an EV manufacturing complex.
The Uttar Pradesh government has announced a plan to position Kanpur as a prominent centre for electric vehicle (EV) production, says a report by Trak.in. This initiative, part of the Kanpur Metropolitan Development Vision – 2030, is designed to contribute ₹700 crore to the regional economy while creating a complete electric vehicle manufacturing ecosystem.
The Uttar Pradesh State Industrial Development Authority (UPSIDA) has identified a 500-acre site near Bhimsen for developing an EV manufacturing complex. The chosen location provides significant logistical benefits, positioned alongside the dedicated freight corridor with superior rail and highway connections that will facilitate smooth transportation of raw materials and completed vehicles.
The EV manufacturing facility will operate through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) framework, creating opportunities for both government and private sector participation in the region's industrial expansion. This cooperative structure is likely to draw domestic and international investors to Kanpur's developing electric mobility sector.
The manufacturing complex could accommodate production facilities for essential EV components including electric motors, vehicle frames, steel components, and lithium-ion battery cells. The development will also feature assembly units for batteries, charging equipment, control systems, and electronic parts, creating a complete production ecosystem for EVs.
A significant feature of this development is the planned research and development facility, which will focus on advancing electric vehicle technology, supporting cutting-edge product innovation, and contributing to sustainability advancements in transportation both domestically and internationally.
The project also incorporates an integrated components manufacturing cluster specifically designed to assist small and medium enterprises. This component aims to support local business owners and emerging companies, creating new commercial opportunities and generating significant employment throughout the area.
The substantial financial commitment and comprehensive development approach are expected to establish Kanpur as a major force in India's electric transportation industry. This development is in line with the 'Make in India' initiative and environmental sustainability objectives.
