Kia India is gearing up for a significant expansion of its lineup with the upcoming launch of two eagerly anticipated models: the new-generation Kia Carnival and the Kia EV9. These models, set to be unveiled on October 3, 2024, mark a strategic move by the Korean automaker to strengthen its presence in the premium MPV and electric vehicle segments in India.
The Kia Carnival, a name already familiar to the Indian market, is making a comeback in a refreshed and upgraded avatar. First introduced in India in 2020, the Carnival quickly established itself as a premium offering in the MPV segment. However, it was discontinued in 2023, leaving a gap that the new-generation model aims to fill.
The fourth-generation Carnival, which has been available globally, is expected to come loaded with high-end features aimed at providing an elevated in-cabin experience. Highlights include a 12.3-inch dual-screen setup, a panoramic sunroof, ventilated and powered seats, and a three-zone automatic climate control system. These enhancements are likely to position the Carnival as a more luxurious and feature-rich alternative to competitors like the Toyota Innova Hycross.
Under the hood, the Carnival might offer either a 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine producing 284 bhp and 353 Nm of torque or a 1.6-litre petrol-hybrid unit generating 239 bhp and 367 Nm of torque. It remains to be seen if Kia will also introduce a diesel variant, considering the popularity of diesel MPVs in the Indian market.
The Kia EV9, a flagship electric SUV, is set to become the brand’s second electric offering in India, following the success of the Kia EV6. The EV9, which has already garnered attention globally, especially after winning the 2024 WCOTY title, is a crucial part of Kia's electrification strategy in India, aiming to tap into the growing demand for premium electric vehicles.
The EV9 will be offered with two battery pack options—a 76.1 kWh and a 99.8 kWh—providing a range of up to 541 km on a single charge, according to the WLTP cycle. This range, combined with fast charging capabilities, positions the EV9 as a strong competitor in the luxury electric SUV segment.
Inside, the EV9 mirrors the Carnival's tech-rich cabin with a 12.3-inch dual-screen setup and adds a 14-speaker Meridian sound system.
Kia's pricing strategy for these two models will be crucial in determining their success in the Indian market. The new-generation Carnival is expected to start at a price point north of ₹40 lakh (ex-showroom), positioning it as a more upscale alternative to the Toyota Innova Hycross, yet more accessible than luxury MPVs like the Toyota Vellfire and Lexus LM.
The EV9, on the other hand, is anticipated to be priced around ₹80 lakh (ex-showroom). This pricing could make it an attractive option for buyers looking for a premium electric SUV that is relatively more affordable than models like the BMW iX and Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV.
