Lamborghini plans to use AI to adapt to the driver’s emotions via its 6D sensor.
In an interview with The Drive, Lamborghini’s Chief Technology Officer, Rouven Mohr, revealed plans to leverage artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance track performance and road safety.
Building on existing driving assists, the automaker is developing an AI system that adjusts controls based on drivers’ emotions, marking a significant step forward.
Mohr explained that Lamborghini already employs machine learning for torque management, adapting to road surfaces and driving styles. Future systems could detect emotions, tailoring assists accordingly.
For instance, if a driver seeks fun, the car might allow more sideways movement, managed by advanced algorithms. This approach differs from General Motors’ mood-based interior adjustments, focusing instead on handling dynamics.
The initiative relies on the 6D sensor, unveiled with the Lamborghini Fenomeno, a compact module that monitors vehicle sensors and driving styles. Enhanced with stronger machine learning, it could adapt in real time, improving or adjusting performance.
Mohr noted that a rules-based system would initially refine driving behaviour before full AI integration.
While promising, the technology raises concerns. Over-reliance on AI to correct excessive steering could hinder skill development, turning assists into a crutch rather than a safety net.
Drivers might achieve faster times without mastering technique, risking poor performance in non-AI vehicles. A reward-based system, loosening controls as skills improve, offers a balanced alternative.
This tech needs robust development to ensure safety and skill retention. Lamborghini’s move may influence global standards, balancing technological advancement with driver education in the evolving automotive landscape.
