Jaguar Land Rover is recalling 250,857 SUVs in the US after a potential driver airbag connector issue was found across Defender, Discovery and Range Rover models. The action is significant for Tata Motors-owned JLR as North America remains a key luxury SUV market, though the present filing relates to the US and Federalised Territories.

Jaguar Land Rover North America is recalling 250,857 Land Rover SUVs in the US over a driver airbag concern that could prevent the airbag from deploying as intended in a crash. The recall covers certain 2022-2026 Range Rover, 2021-2026 Discovery and 2020-2026 Defender models, according to a Part 573 safety recall report filed with the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The issue relates to the connector to the driver’s airbag at the clockspring. The filing says the connector may experience fretting corrosion over time, increasing resistance in the driver airbag circuit and potentially resulting in the airbag failing to deploy when required. JLR has said an airbag warning lamp should illuminate at least 300-400 miles before any potential non-deployment, giving owners an early fault indication.

Model-wise, the recall population includes 69,685 Range Rover units, 83,620 Discovery units and 97,552 Defender units. The affected vehicles were produced across different periods, with Range Rover units built from July 8, 2021 to June 3, 2026, Discovery units from September 14, 2020 to June 4, 2026, and Defender units from October 16, 2019 to May 28, 2026.

The safety action follows an internal investigation that began on August 29, 2025 after an increase in warranty claims linked to airbag warning lamp illumination. The company’s review found oxides on some returned clockspring connector pins, while subsequent analysis showed varying levels of fretting corrosion. By late March 2026, vibration rig testing indicated that normal vehicle articulation could induce corrosion on the connectors.

JLR has not received any claims or field reports in the US of airbag non-deployment, and the filing says there have been no reported accidents, injuries or fires in the US linked to the concern. Dealers will apply a protective lubricant gel to the driver airbag connector terminals free of charge. No parts will be replaced, and the same lubricant gel application has been adopted in production to cut off the defect. The recall does not affect any of the cars sold in India.
