Land Rover is developing a compact electric Defender Sport to replace Discovery Sport, combining rugged styling, dual-motor AWD and off-road capability. Its lunch is planned for 2027.

Land Rover is preparing to introduce a new fully electric SUV, widely expected to be named the Defender Sport. Positioned as a smaller sibling to the iconic Defender, this upcoming model is expected to blend rugged styling with strong off-road credentials while targeting a more accessible price point. Once launched, the new model will effectively take the place of the ageing Discovery Sport in the brand’s lineup.

Early prototype sightings by Auto Express suggest the Defender Sport will retain the upright, boxy stance associated with the larger Defender, though with some refinements. Slimmer headlights, a slightly sleeker nose, and redesigned proportions will help adapt the bold design language to a smaller footprint.

Expect rugged visual elements such as blacked-out lower bumpers, protective cladding, and off-road-ready wheels, alongside optional urban-focused styling packs. Customisation will remain a major focus. Buyers are likely to have access to contrast roof finishes, accessory packs, wheel arch extensions, and expedition-style add-ons such as roof racks.

Underpinning the Defender Sport will be JLR’s new EMA electric platform. Unlike the traditional Defender’s combustion-based layout, this architecture allows for improved cabin packaging and a fully electric drivetrain. The SUV will feature a dual-motor setup and a flat battery pack mounted under the floor.

Battery capacity is expected to fall between 70 kWh and 90 kWh, delivering an estimated range of around 480 to 515 km per charge. Despite its upright design, which may impact aerodynamic efficiency, the model should still offer respectable range thanks to modern electric motor technology.

Importantly, the Defender Sport is expected to retain genuine off-road capability. Standard all-wheel drive, Terrain Response technology, and precise torque distribution from its electric system will enhance performance beyond what traditional mechanical systems can achieve.
