LML used to sell commuter motorcycles in the early 2000s under the Freedom badge.

Bajaj’s CNG product—the Freedom 125—is likely to become the centre of a trademark battle as SG Corporate Mobility, the parent company of LML, has filed a suit against Bajaj in the Delhi High Court. LML used to have a motorcycle called the Freedom that sold well in the early 2000s, and hence, the conflict arises.

Bajaj did receive its trademark certification of the word ‘Freedom’ for its CNG bike in early February 2024, which was earlier accepted but now is opposed. SG Corporate Mobility had also filed trademarks for ‘LML’ and ‘LML Freedom’ in 2022, which was also accepted. LML had previously been refused the trademark in 2013.

LML has yet to launch its bike or scooter in the current electric mobility era, and possibly, the Freedom tag could have made its way onto one of its bikes in the future. However, Bajaj’s CNG bike came into existence this year and is likely to be a big player in the commuter space in the coming few months. This issue could potentially cause some discomfort to the brand.

We have reached out to Bajaj for a formal quote on the matter. When inquired about the potential trademark issue before the launch of the bike, Bajaj officials had made it very clear that the company had secured the trademark. Hence, we shall wait to see what comes of this matter.
