Global NCAP tested the Suzuki Ertiga under its Safer Cars For Africa programme.
In the latest round of crash tests by the global safety watchdog Global NCAP under the Safer Cars For Africa programme, the made-in-India Maruti Suzuki Ertiga has been crash tested. It scored a 1-star rating for adult occupant protection and a 2-star rating for child occupant protection. Interestingly, the Ertiga was also tested in 2019 by Global NCAP and it received a 3-star rating then. However, that was under the older testing protocols.
For adult occupant protection tests, the Ertiga could only secure 23.63 points out of a possible 34. In the frontal offset deformable barrier test, it received 7.937 points with good head and neck protection for the front occupants. While the chest of the passenger received good protection, the chest of the driver only had marginal protection. In the side movable deformable barrier test it received 14.693 points with good head protection and adequate chest protection. Global NCAP didn’t test for a side pole impact test as it only comes with two airbags. The body shell of the Ertiga was rated as unstable and it was not capable of withstanding further loadings.
In the child occupant protection tests, the Maruti Suzuki MPV scored 19.40 points out of 49. It received a dynamic score of 14.77 points out of 24, 4.63 points out of 12 for child restraint system (CRS) installation and nil out of 13 in vehicle assessment score. Global NCAP test child safety with dummies of 18-month-old and 3-year-old children. The safety watchdog commented that both CRSs offered full side impact protection.
Acko Drive has reached out to Maruti Suzuki regarding a comment on the result from Global NCAP’s crash test. The story will be updated when we receive a comment from the manufacturer.
The Maruti Suzuki Ertiga is built in India and exported to South Africa. It has been sold in the African nation since 2014 and the second-generation model was launched there in 2019. It gets the same 1.5-litre petrol engine with 103 bhp and 138 Nm. It also comes with the 5-speed manual gearbox but unlike the India-spec model, it comes with a 4-speed automatic transmission.
