The Indian automotive industry showed robust growth during the first quarter (Q1) of fiscal year 2025-26, with total vehicle registrations reaching 6 million units across all categories. According to data released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh are the dominant regions, both driving significant portions of national sales volumes.
The passenger vehicle segment recorded impressive quarterly performance with registrations exceeding 1.012 million units across India. Maharashtra established itself as the leading regional market, capturing nearly 12 per cent of total volumes with 119,000 units sold. The state's dominance was followed by Uttar Pradesh securing 11.3 per cent market share, while Gujarat (7.6 per cent), Karnataka (7.2 per cent), and Haryana (6.8 per cent) completed the top-performing regions.
India's motorcycle and scooter market, serving as the primary growth engine for the automotive sector, achieved sales of 4.675 million units during the April-June period. Uttar Pradesh demonstrated market leadership with 17.5 per cent share totalling 818,000 registrations, while Maharashtra captured 10.3 per cent of the segment. Tamil Nadu, Bihar, and Madhya Pradesh secured positions in the top five with 7.3 per cent, 6.9 per cent, and 6.4 per cent respectively.
The three-wheeler category, essential for urban last-mile transportation solutions, registered 165,000 units during the quarter. Uttar Pradesh maintained its leadership position with 13 per cent market share exceeding 21,000 units, ahead of Maharashtra's 11.5 per cent contribution. Gujarat and Karnataka followed with 9.4 per cent and 8.9 per cent market shares respectively.
Commercial vehicle sales demonstrated strong quarterly performance at 223,000 units, driven by infrastructure development and logistics expansion. Maharashtra topped this segment with 14.2 per cent share representing 32,188 vehicles, while Uttar Pradesh secured 8.6 per cent of the market. Tamil Nadu (8.5 per cent), Gujarat (7.9 per cent), and Rajasthan (6.5 per cent) also reported healthy demand levels.
