Mahindra & Mahindra, the world's largest tractor manufacturer by volume, showcased three new alternate fuel tractors at Agrovision 2025 in Nagpur on 21 November 2025. The event took place with Nitin Gadkari, Union Cabinet Minister of Road Transport and Highways, and Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Union Cabinet Minister for Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare, in attendance.
The company displayed a CNG and CBG dual-fuel tractor based on the Yuvo Tech+ platform. This tractor runs on Compressed Natural Gas, Compressed Biogas, or diesel. Mahindra also showed an ethanol flex fuel engine that can run on ethanol made from sugarcane, maize, plant stubble, and farm waste. The third technology on display was an electric tractor built on the Mahindra OJA platform, which offers reduced operating costs and fast charging options.

Veejay Nakra, President of Farm Equipment Business at Mahindra, said the company is committed to leading India's shift toward alternate fuel technologies. He stated that the tractors are aligned with the Government of India's vision of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2070. The technologies were developed at Mahindra Research Valley in Chennai.
The Indian tractor market is seeing movement toward alternate fuel options. TAFE, which makes John Deere and Swaraj branded tractors, has also worked on developing CNG and biogas tractors. TAFE's Group President TR Kesavan stated that the company faces challenges in bringing these tractors to market due to the lack of refuelling infrastructure in rural areas. He said that once CNG and biofuel outlets are set up in villages, these tractors can be launched.

India's first CNG tractor was launched by Mahindra in November 2023. Farmers using Mahindra's CNG tractor can save up to Rs 100 per hour in operating costs compared to diesel tractors. The tractor has 24 kilogrammes of gas onboard capacity.
The Government of India is working on setting up 400 CNG filling stations across the country. Union Minister Gadkari stated that biofuel could lead to annual savings of Rs 1 lakh per farmer. The government is also exploring isobutanol, derived from ethanol through fermentation, as a diesel alternative for tractors and construction equipment.
Mahindra is not behind in alternate fuel technology. The company has showcased CNG, CBG, and LPG tractors in the past. Industry reports show that Mahindra leads in bringing these technologies to the market first. Other manufacturers are following similar paths, but infrastructure remains a challenge. The move toward alternate fuel tractors is part of India's efforts to meet Euro VI emission norms and reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels. The cost savings and reduced emissions from these tractors are expected to benefit farmers across the country.
