The Mahindra Thar Roxx is available in six variants with seven colour options.
After several spy shots and much anticipation, Mahindra finally launched the five-door iteration of the Thar, aka the Thar Roxx. Based on a completely new platform that the brand is calling M-Glyde and with several premium luxurious fittings, hardware and features, the new Mahindra Thar Roxx comes across as quite the promising luxury off-roader.
There are two powertrains on offer here – the mStallion turbo petrol engine and the mHawk diesel engine, along with both four-wheel drive and two-wheel drive capability. It slots below the Mahindra ScorpioN with ex-showroom prices starting from ₹12.99 lakh and the top variant available at ₹18.99 lakh. In between this price range, the new Mahindra Thar Roxx is divided into six trim levels and here’s what you get with each model:
The entry-level Mahindra Thar Roxx MX1 is available with both the 158 bhp/ 330 Nm mStallion petrol engine option and 148 bhp/ 330 Nm mHawk diesel engine option, but two-wheel drive capability only.
Despite being the base-spec model, the Mahindra Thar Roxx gets an LED headlight and a tail light. The dashboard features a 10-inch infotainment touchscreen but does not have Android Auto or Apple CarPlay. Apart from that keyless start/stop button, 6 airbags, a 3-point seatbelt, 18-inch steel wheels, and the Penta Link suspension with Watts Link and FDD (Frequency Dependent Damping) as part of the new M-Glyde platform are some of the highlights of the MX1 variant.
Additionally, you get power steering with controls mounted, a 60:40 split rear seat, rear AC vents, a height-adjustable driver's seat, all four power windows, a 12V socket at the front, and a USB Type-C charging port for the second row.
Moving up the order, the Mahindra Thar Roxx MX3 adds on wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a wireless charger, a reverse camera, and an auto-dimming IRVM. On the powertrain front, it gets both the diesel and petrol engine, but the latter can be had with the AT gearbox only, and the diesel engine can be had with both manual and automatic gearboxes. With the AT gearbox, the Mahindra Thar Roxx MX3 also gets the brand’s XPLOR terrain modes—Sand, Mud, and Snow—and drive modes—Zip and Zoom. On the aesthetic front, while the LED suite remains untouched, a dual-tone metal hard top is also added to the mix. Inside, the Thar Roxx MX3 gets a rear armrest with a cup holder too.
The Mahindra AX3L is more of a technological update from the MX3, adding 10 Level2 ADAS features, including automatic Emergency Braking, Electric Park Brake, and Auto Hold. Then there’s the 10-inch digital instrument cluster with Mahindra’s Adrenox connectivity suite.
It also gets fully adjustable temperature control and DTS Sound Staging. The Mahindra Thar Roxx AX3L is only available with the 2.2-litre diesel engine paired to a 6-speed MT gearbox exclusively.
Despite slotted above the Mahindra Thar Roxx AX3L trim, the Mahindra MX5 is priced the same. The former part of the above statement is backed by the fact that this variant adds on a single-pane sunroof, to begin with and rides on 18-inch alloy wheels. Gets 4x4 capability with an electronic lock differential and three terrain modes. On the features front, auto headlamp and wiper, with footwell lighting and TPMS, are the other standouts. The cabin also benefits from an acoustic windshield and leatherette seats, and the steering wheel is wrapped in leather. The MX5 does not get Level 2 ADAS features, though.
The 10 Level2 ADAS features continue with the Mahindra AX5L variant, which again is available with the diesel engine only, with both RWD and 4WD capability, paired to a 6-speed manual gearbox option only. The feature list is the same as the AX3L, but the 10-inch infotainment screen and instrument cluster get HD display here, while the remainder—fully automatic temperature control and wireless charger—are the same. The single-pane sunroof available here is another addition missed in the AX3L. However, the 4WD AT variants are available with CrawlSmart and Intelliturn (which sharpens the turning radius by using the brakes) features as well.
Mahindra’s tagline for the top-spec Thar Roxx AX7L is “Luxury Without Limits”, and quite rightly so. The plethora of luxury starts with that massive panoramic sunroof, the largest in the sub 4.5 m SUV segment. Moving on, it rides on 19-inch wheels and is the only model available with this size.
The cabin benefits from leatherette-wrapped door trims, a 6-way adjustable driver's seat with ventilation, and a cooled glove box. Level2 ADAS is available, along with a 360-degree camera with a Blind view monitor. A 9-speaker sound system from Harman/ Kardon branded audio with a subwoofer is another major highlight.
