The revamped facility, now twice its original size, represents a significant infrastructure and capability enhancement.
Mahindra & Mahindra has officially unveiled its expanded and upgraded its design studio, Mahindra India Design Studio (MIDS) in Mumbai, underlining the company's long-term commitment to in-house automotive design and global product competitiveness. The revamped facility, now twice its original size, represents a significant infrastructure and capability enhancement as Mahindra aims to consolidate its position in both domestic and international markets.

Originally established in 2015, the MIDS has been a cornerstone of Mahindra’s design operations, contributing to high-impact models such as the XUV700, Thar, and Scorpio-N. The expanded 2025 iteration of the studio now caters to a broader design portfolio that includes the Auto sector, Farm Equipment division, and the Last Mile Mobility (LMM) business.
Pratap Bose, Chief Design and Creative Officer, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. said, “The new studio will attract the best design talent from India and become a leading automotive design centre in India. The influence of MIDS on our products will be felt for many years to come.”

Equipped with cutting-edge machinery, new design labs, and dedicated functions like Human-Machine Interface (HMI) Design and Design Quality & Realisation, the upgraded MIDS is positioned as a comprehensive design development centre. These additions enable Mahindra to fast-track its shift toward digitally integrated design and more refined user experiences.
The timing of the announcement coincides with Mahindra’s intensified focus on electric mobility, particularly through its upcoming ‘Born Electric’ (BE) range. Although no new production model was showcased at the studio’s unveiling, company officials confirmed that future EVs and ICE vehicles will heavily draw on the studio’s capabilities—particularly in cabin ergonomics, aerodynamics, and digital interfaces.

With its upgraded MIDS in Mumbai, Mahindra joins the ranks of global OEMs with significant in-country design infrastructure. The move also places it in closer comparison to competitors such as Tata Motors, which operates overseas design centres in the UK and Italy, and Hyundai, which relies on its Namyang Global R&D Centre in South Korea.
