While the official announcement is yet to be made, the Mahindra XUV700 website indicates that production of all 5-seater variants—ranging from the entry-level MX to the mid-range AX5—is phased out.

Mahindra & Mahindra has discontinued the 5-seater version of its popular SUV, the XUV700, due to underwhelming sales performance and shifting customer preferences. While the official announcement is yet to be made, the Mahindra XUV700 website indicates that production of all 5-seater variants—ranging from the entry-level MX to the mid-range AX5—is phased out. Launched with high expectations, the 5-seater XUV700 was intended to offer a more affordable alternative within the SUV’s lineup. However, it has failed to attract a significant share of buyers, who have largely opted for the more feature-rich 7-seater variants instead. The primary appeal of the XUV700 lies in its spacious interior and extensive equipment list—benefits that are more pronounced in the higher-end AX7 and AX7L trims, which are exclusively available in 6- and 7-seat configurations.

Though the 5-seater model does offer more boot space and essential features, it is limited to the AX5 variant, which misses out on a comprehensive list of premium features. These include 18-inch alloy wheels, the ADAS suite, tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), leatherette upholstery, side airbags, powered driver seat with memory function, and auto-folding ORVMs. Other key omissions include dual-zone climate control, digital video recording (DVR), a Sony 3D surround sound system, 360-degree camera, electronic parking brake, adaptive cruise control, ventilated seats, wireless charging, and the all-wheel-drive diesel automatic setup exclusive to the AX7L variant.

With customer demand skewing heavily toward the more feature-loaded 6- and 7-seater models, Mahindra appears poised to streamline its production strategy to focus on the more profitable and better-performing variants. The decision to drop the 5-seater is also in line with Mahindra’s recent trend of consolidating offerings to improve manufacturing efficiency and reduce variant complexity.

The XUV700 continues to be a strong performer in its segment, appreciated for its robust build quality, high safety standards, and powerful drivetrain options. The SUV is offered with two engine choices: a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol unit delivering 197 bhp and 380 Nm of torque, and a 2.2-litre diesel engine available in two states of tune—182 bhp and 420 Nm for the 2WD version, and 450 Nm in the AWD configuration. Both engines can be paired with manual or automatic transmissions, depending on the variant.

The XUV700 is currently priced between ₹14.49 lakh and ₹25.14 lakh (ex-showroom, India), making it one of the most competitively priced mid-sized SUVs in the Indian market. Despite the elimination of the 5-seater variant, the model is expected to retain its appeal among buyers seeking a spacious, well-equipped family SUV with strong performance credentials.
