Share of rail dispatches from Maruti Suzuki has increased more than fivefold, from 5.1 percent in 2016 to nearly 26 percent in 2025.

Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) has achieved a significant milestone in sustainable logistics by dispatching over 5.85 lakh vehicles through Indian Railways in calendar year 2025. This marks the company’s highest-ever rail dispatch volume and represents an 18% year-on-year growth compared to CY2024. The achievement underlines Maruti Suzuki’s continued focus on reducing its environmental footprint while improving efficiency in outbound logistics.

Over the past decade, Maruti Suzuki has steadily increased its reliance on rail transport, with the share of rail-based vehicle dispatches rising more than fivefold, from 5.1 percent in 2016 to approximately 26 percent in 2025. In absolute terms, rail dispatch volumes have grown over 7.5 times, from nearly 77,000 vehicles in 2016 to over 5.85 lakh units in 2025.

Reduced carbon emissions, fuel consumption

This shift has contributed to lower carbon emissions, reduced fuel consumption, and eased congestion on road networks. According to company estimates, Maruti Suzuki’s rail-based logistics operations in CY2025 helped avoid around 87,904 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO₂e) emissions and saved more than 687 lakh litres of fuel. These gains align with the automaker’s broader sustainability objectives and India’s long-term net-zero ambitions.

Commenting on the milestone, Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director and CEO of Maruti Suzuki India Limited, said “During the year, we strengthened our green logistic efforts through two landmark events– the inauguration of India’s largest automobile in-plant railway siding at our Manesar facility, and second was we dispatched vehicles by rail to Kashmir valley through the world's highest railway arch bridge over Chenab river, a first by any automobile manufacturer. Our mid-term goal is to increase rail-based vehicle dispatches to 35 percent by FY 2030-31#, contributing to India’s net-zero ambition by 2070.”

Maruti Suzuki’s green logistics journey began early, with the company becoming the first automobile manufacturer in India to obtain an Automobile Freight Train Operator (AFTO) licence in 2013. Since FY2014–15, it has transported over 28 lakh vehicles by rail from 22 dispatch points, servicing more than 600 cities nationwide through a hub-and-spoke model. The company currently operates over 45 flexi-deck rakes, each capable of carrying around 260 vehicles per trip.

In CY2025, dispatches from in-plant railway sidings at Gujarat and Manesar accounted for 53 percent of Maruti Suzuki’s total rail volumes, reinforcing the role of integrated infrastructure in enabling efficient and sustainable vehicle logistics.
