Maruti Suzuki is expanding roles for women at its shopfloors by imparting the same on-the-job training and skill development programmes as their male counterparts.

Maruti Suzuki has expanded women participation at its Gurugram and Manesar manufacturing facilities, with a focused push over the last two years to increase hiring in vehicle manufacturing and engine transmission roles. The company said these employees are contributing across assembly and quality control functions, where precision and consistency are especially important.

The company noted that women at its shop floor undergo the same on-the-job training and skill development programmes as their male counterparts. That approach, Maruti Suzuki said, is meant to support equal opportunity for career growth across functions. The move also reflects a wider shift in how the company is building diversity, with inclusion no longer limited to office-based roles alone.

Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director and CEO of Maruti Suzuki India Limited, said “We have always had a good representation of women across diverse functions like Engineering, Marketing & Sales, Finance, Legal, Logistics, and Supply Chain. However, real integration happens on the shopfloor when they work on building high- quality vehicles with precision and care. It is my personal wish to strengthen women's representation at the shopfloor.”

Infrastructure changes support the transition

To create a more supportive work environment, Maruti Suzuki said it studied the needs of women employees and then introduced several infrastructure and safety-related changes. These included adequate restrooms, changing areas, a creche and additional safety support, such as guards on duty and patrolling during evening shifts.

The company also began sensitisation training for other employees to encourage a more open and inclusive workplace culture. Alongside that, it has mandated 100% participation in POSH training, aiming to strengthen awareness around harassment prevention and workplace safety.

Women workforce crosses 1,300 across functions

Maruti Suzuki said it has employed more than 190 women on its shop floor in the past year. With that addition, the company’s total women workforce across all functions now stands at over 1,300. The number is significant not only in absolute terms, but also because it shows the company’s intent to move diversity deeper into manufacturing operations, where participation has traditionally been lower.

The latest development suggests a steady, structured approach rather than a symbolic one. By combining hiring, training, workplace design and safety measures, Maruti Suzuki appears to be building a framework that can support longer-term participation by women in manufacturing roles.
